Users missing profile pictures

Just wanted to post a dream I had today, so I went to the Weird/Funny dreams thread. I was surprised and confused to discover that several forum users have seemingly lost their profile pictures to…

…this thing.

The issue seems to affect the forum users who haven’t been recently active.

Noticed this too, at first thought this only affected old “fresheyes” who didn’t bother to change their pfp into something else. This might be related to that large discouse update installed recently…

Edit: for me mechapumpkin and oofer for example render correctly through…

Strange, maybe it has something specifically to do with Safari?

Edit: I checked in firefox and while the problem still persists there, the set of affected accounts isn’t exactly the same. I also noticed another strange anomaly. Some of the accounts have their pfp’s loaded in some situations, but not others, for example:

I can try to restart my computer to see if that fixes the issue.

Hopefully it does, as you seem to be the single one affected by this mysterious pfp plague…

I just remembered that when I was starting my history lessons today, I had some problems connecting with my teacher due to an apparently weak internet connection. So maybe it’s just that? Bad internet? Though I remember using the forums through poor internet before and I don’t recall anything like this ever happening. Plus everything is working rather smoothly, which is uncharacteristic of poor connection.

Again, the new update could’ve caused something to change…

I guess that might be the case

I am sure Hhyyrylainen’d know the best…

It seems like there’s no general issue with the profile pictures. They just fail to load for @Nie for some reason. Either Nie’s internet is the problem, or the cache server that feeds the PFPs (they go through a caching layer) has bad data, which should eventually sort itself out. The caches are country specific, so a problem might be very localized.

If I view that thread or the list of users I don’t see any broken profile pictures.

I saw one broken pfp a few days ago on, I think it was deathwake? But it seems to have sorted itself out. I’ve seen a few of them before, they’re typically spaced a few months apart.

Yeah, I’ve also seen them a few days ago but they seem to have fixed themselves…

On my computer: at the top of the screen (next to search), at the bottom of the screen (within posts), within quotes, and on the latest list, I see that icon instead of my usual purple P, but next to my posts, on the who on now list, and on my profile it is the normal purple P. And I have good internet.

Strange that it’s different for various people… But it doesn’t seem too painful, so don’t know if Hhyyrylainen will put the effort into fixing the bug.

Each place the profile picture is used is actually a different image as the resolution of the image needs to be optimized for different viewing. So all of those images go separately through the caching CDN layer, and it seems like some of the images have failed to be retrieved and as such are cached as incorrect placeholders.

I guess I can flush the cache completely, it shouldn’t be that big of a wave of new requests hitting the server as a result. And if the problem was cached incorrectly retrieved images, that should fix it.

We should find out soon if no new reports flow in…

The issue seems to have mostly resolved for me now. There’re still a few scattered accounts that appear overtaken by the gray guy[1], but the vast majority now have properly rendered pfps.
