I think there should be many types of corporations and companies from the start of this stage, such as, Manufacturing Industry, Food Industry, etc. You can choose your nation’s own major industry and have advantages on that industry. (ex:logging industry → major industry → makes chopping down trees 25% faster, multiply the profit from selling wood for 15%)
Companies related to the major industry can build up it’s own factories around the city. When the major industry change, those factories will slowly stop running, and soon the ownership of those factories will change to the next major industry companies.
Those companies will compete with each others by making the product better and lowering or raising price of it considering their budget and the production cost(basic budget that is given to new companies is decided by the nation’s policy.).
There’s a certain number of companies in the industry. They will keep competing until only one survive. Small new companies will keep popping up so it can deal with the big company, but if the big one managed to survive, it will become the monopoly in that industry. You need to stop the monopoly by supporting new start-up companies by providing them with money, so it has good products from the start. But if you don’t do anything, or if your policy fail, the monopoly will start to raise the price, until it skyrockets. They will become greedy(or maybe not, but many probably will) and lower the quality of their products, until consumers starts to boycott. The company will fall down very fast, until it becomes small company. But, it will ultimately end up with a great depression.
Original idea wrote on ‘Ideas for the Industrial Stage’ by me.

What if you’re controlling a collective species? Would this part of industrial just be missing?
Based on the thread title I almost merged this thread but the post content didn’t seem that related.

This seems to be a more comprehensive concept of corporations as non-player controlled “agents”, not always striving to cause harm upon you, atleast directly…

This is a decent simplification of capitalism. It’s irrelevant to most other economic systems. For example, in mercantilism, your goal is for there to be a monopoly. You wish for there to be one corporation or noble house or something, that follows all the rules and doesn’t price gouge too much. You can remove their monopoly license if they’re doing a bad job, or you can change the rules so they only have a monopoly on colony B’s exports, if colony A seems like it’s underproducing and could use new leadership.

If the specie at least has an individuality, like human, it will try to make corporations and companies on it’s own will. But collective species like ants won’t likely have companies. It will be pretty much like planned economy.
If you choose a major industry, all the other industry will (almost)die off. Example in our world is China.

Will these also be present in the space stage?

Yes, probably. They will try to make more profits by trading with another space empires, doing a big project(terraforming a whole planet to use it as a factory hub, developing worker robots for efficiency, etc), etc.
Importance of diversity will also appear on Space stage too, but it won’t affect the nation that much, thanks to enormous amount of planets and their resources, and huge amount of space empires to trade with(in the society/industrial stage, the resource is only limited by it’s planet, so monopoly will hugely affect the nation.)

Should there too be the equivalents of corporations in the society stage?

Maybe stores will work for Society stage. There weren’t such organization which can be called ‘Company’ in the medieval age, and mass production should be possible to make a big group like a company. But stores will work for it. Cottage industry was the only way to get tools and stuff inside the nation on medieval age, so my best guess is that this will also work on Society stage and alien planets, therefore stores would be equivalent in this stage. There won’t be such thing as monopoly. There might be a short-living monopoly when someone pioneer new industry for the first time, but no long-living, trouble-making monopoly will exist.

I guess they will emerge as soon as the first cities are created…

What about corporate/industrial espionage? How will the game handle sabotage of technologies by other businesses?

My guess is that, the newer the tech is, the harder will it be to grasp for a spy, and the older and more widespread it is, the easier will it be to acquire.
