Solenopsis daguerrei is a species of fire ant. It is the only species in the Genus Solenopsis that has no workers. Instead it, the queens infiltrate a related fire ant colony (such as Red Imported Fire Ants), by copying it’s pheromones.
It then latches onto the queen, eating it’s food and slowly killing it, whilst laying eggs, which are taken care of by the host ants. These eggs only hatch into queens and males, which mate and perpetuate the cycle.
The host queen eventually starved, killing the colony. Because of this, it is being considered as a method of lowering the population of invasive Red Imported Fire Ants.
