Yes I am serrious i thought i’d put the thrive community to the test
Alright then, Here’s what you all need to do:
-Create a good phoneme inventory, and for belgium’s sake, use the international phonetic alphabet. A good amount of phonemes is around 20. create 3 or 5 vowels TOTAL including dipthongs. english is incredibly strange in it’s vowel amount.
-Build a real grammar. This I always struggled with, but you cannot slack off on the creation of a grammar. Are you going to have a set word order? If not, what will you use to replace it? What will the syllable structure be, where will the stress on words be?
You need to answer all of these questions and more to create a REAL grammar for your conlang.
-Finally, create a lexicon. This is the most time-consuming and boring part, and you never truly finish creating new words. Make sure every word you create follows your defined grammar rules, except for possibly a few that are exceptions if you want to make the language naturalistic.
I will attach the grammar of my conlang as an example.
My conlang contains 6 tenses and 4 cases. While the tense amount if fairly high, the case is a very common and good amount. Sorry if my reply is all over the place, I didn’t proofread it.
higher up in the post we had a chart for the consonants could you check that out for us?
Here’s your phoneme inventory made to fit the IPA. the alvoelar approximate and the trill at the same time is kinda strange, but other than that it seems fine.
Found a channel desicated to language.
Gosh, I haven’t heard of Xidnaf in forever. He stopped posting videos a long while ago.
Who’s Xidnaf?
Is he some Youtuber?
I might create the script if you want, I can write in a few scripts (Cyrilic, Arabic, Kanji + Hiragana + Katakana, Futhark, Rovas, Hangul, bit of Devanagari…) so I could put something together if you want. I will just check out the alphabet and grammar and so and see what I can do.
Edit: I could not find anything, so I might just freestyle some random scrip styles and you can pick one and once I have the phonemes, I can finally make it a real deal.
Another Edit: I have something
I take Chinese and personally like doing compounding symbols as in making some words other words mashed together .(I hate the tonal part) so building symbols might be a good idea. English examples are p, d, and q are all lowercase ‘l’ plus a ‘c’ attached. Kind of like this:
This might just be the longest necro and double post on this forum, but so what?
I was wondering if anyone would be interested in reviving this project and working on making a community conlang! I haven’t yet found a reason why we need a conlang, but that doesnt stop me from wanting to make one. So to start off, what languages do yall speak? I think it woud be a good idea to incorperate some aspects of natural languages into the conlang.
I’m interested in conlanging but I’m not super active in these forums. I can speak English and the conlang toki pona, but I have a fair bit of conlanging experience.
Great! its not as if you have to be super active to contribute to a project.
So, what should our phenemes be? I was thinking something along the lines of:
Bilabial | Alveolar | Palatal | Velar | Glottal | |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Nasal | m | n | ɲ | ŋ | |
Stop | p,b | t,d | k,g | ʔ | |
Fricative | s,z | ʃ,ʒ | h | ||
Approximate | j | ||||
Lat. Approx. | l |
what do you think?
That looks good. Are we planning on evolving this from a proto language or just having this? What kind of grammar are we going to have? Big grammar questions to me are as follows: Should this be Head initial or Head final? What word order should we use? Analytic, Synthetic or Fusional?
We should also decide vowels and phonotactics, how does a 5 vowel system with CV(C) structure sound? (May need more restrictions on certain clusters).
P.S [j] is palatal not Velar
P.P.S sorry for all the questions lol
I dont really care much for protolangs, but im not particularly against making one. I was thinking an analytic language that is head initial, and for the word order i was thinking it could change for certain grammatical functions.
I think CV(C) sounds great and I like 5 vowel systems, but what 5? i dont really want to just do a, e, i, o, and u. What do you suggest?
PS that was my bad, i must have mistyped
PPS No worries!
I like your funny words, magic man
f and v should be added
I personally find them to be very ugly sounds, especially v. Again, if it is supported we should add them.
What kind of v pronunciation?
/v/ as in f but your vocal cords vibrate. Do you happen to be german? I cant think of any other language where v could be not /v/
