Progress Updates

Endosymbiosis was already entirely done. The preparing work is for organelle upgrades being able to change the visuals, and the other is accurate collision shapes that match the visuals of the organelles.

My bad. When I read “endosymbiosis lite” in earlier progress updates I interpreted as kind of a prototype/not a fully finished version, so I thought the preliminary work could have been for a more fleshed-out version of endosymbiosis.

It might have some small balancing fixes and maybe auto-evo implementation awaiting but generally it is considered implemented and ready for opinion (right now from builds, later from releases).

Interesting. Why is it called symbiosis “lite” though? Why “lite”?

There’s apparently a more advanced solution which might come in the further future.

That’s what I originally thought - and I thought the preliminary work for for the more advanced solution (but of course I now know it wasn’t).

If I have any say, it is not coming back. Full on customization of organelles for the microbe stage is going to need a full rework of everything in the game that interacts with organelles. So it would be a huge undertaking, require rethinking out the microbe editor and adding a new tab / feature to the editor to customize endosymbionts. Even if someone else programmed that, it would be pretty close to a nightmare to review and playtest that. The right time to add full endosymbiosis was like 5+ years ago, it’s too big part of the game to easily change the concept that we have a list of all existing organelles that doesn’t change. Unless people are fine with a new version with just taking the 3 months to do all the background work to make customizable organelles possible. I think that’s way too high of a cost to pay for a slightly more complex endosymbiosis feature (gameplay-wise) and would delay microbe stage completion a bunch.

I was going to give you a link to where I explained all of this in detail, but it might have been on the Thrive dev discord as I cannot find it on the forums. The only post I found referencing this is back from 2022 where I was glad that endosymbiosis full was not considered a mandatory feature to consider the microbe stage complete.

I wonder if someone will try to implement “Endosymbiosis advanced” in a mod or a fork…

My guess is going to be no, because no matter how many mod ideas are shared, people don’t seem to be making Thrive mods. And in the future when the Thrive modding scene might be a bit more active, it’ll be even harder to reconcile the code differences to make editable organelles work.

There’s very few of them. I can guess that maybe 2 to 4 mods are being made per year. The modding scene is almost dead. Hopefully modding won’t be so rare if the game becomes more popular.

I don’t know how to make :thrive: mods.

Well, making code for the base game might be even better than making mods. And you have proven yourself in that field.

This sure looks to be a gameplay-feature-rich update!

Finally I can eat rocks efficiently

Edit: Is the reworked agent system planned for 0.6.7 or just whatever update is being worked on whenever it’s finished?

I think that it will come in 0.6.78, as I didn’t see it being coded in yet.

There isn’t enough time to entirely redo agents for 0.6.7, but likely a couple of special effect toxin variants will be added next week before the release candidate (and start of feature freeze).

I guess that then 0.6.8 will contain more features from the RAS?

What’s RAS? Only thing I can think of is “Resource allocation system” from Supreme Commander.

I meant the reworked agent system.
