With scouting using a single drone being slow, you decide the best coarse of action is to construct another drone. Soon the drone is finished from a lengthy construction, and testing begins. The drone is better than expected, as it shows better range capability than an average drone, and a lighter structure letting it scout longer.

Scout for… something(5):
While the new drone is finishing, you send out the old one to look for anything of interest. Interesting indeed, as you find a small ruin. This ruin is barely managing to not rust away, it is made up of steel and brick buildings, whatever was in the buildings is long gone. After wondering where these came from, you look into some old drives in your core. ‘Humans’ is what comes up, seemingly an ancient race of intelligent biped primates, you have no idea what to think of this.

Construct Refinery(1):
You are ready to resupply on metal. For a start you attempt to create a refinery, during construction it seems promising but after some test runs the casting system proceeds to lock up. After further investigation, it seems that there are several points where the circuitry gets to hot and melts. This is sadly not an easy fix because of the way the refinery was built. Afterwards it ends up being abandoned and taken apart as needed.

You spend several days looking for any kind of metal. You search to the west, at first it just seems like hills and trees, suddenly you are alarmed by the beeping of the drones metal detector.
A rare find, gold. It seems like just a small deposit at first, but with further scans revealing it as a dense cylinder extending very deep, beyond what you can detect. It seems to contain hollow space in the middle oddly, you assume this may be natural volcanism with enough luck to make a golden tube.

You haphazardly make a long conveyer belt to the river. Taking up most of the construction time.
Once the belt is complete, delivering the resources is simple, and the drill itself is made without issue.

Scout for Conductive Material(3):
After obtaining the vital resource iron, you shift your sights towards a conductor for circuitry.
You start scanning the large fields finding little in the way of useful material, until you find a small patch of exposed stone to the south with noticable rusty green bands. With your drones detectors going off you are completely sure this is copper. You aren’t completely sure if there is more than just these bands, but they will have to do.

After leaving the ore for a season to generate some power, you get back to the deposit(Which I forgot to specify a location, it’s not too far northeast). You arrive with supplies to construct a drill, after a slow season of building, the drill seems ready. You turn it on, and it start hitting the heavy material with loud whirs and bangs. Digging up piles of raw ore, ready to be used.

Follow Iron Traces(6):
You trace the iron to a large hill to the west with many warm springs on it, which flow out into a nearby lake that feeds out a into river, all laced with iron. Below the hill there seems to be some large deposit, too deep to reach, being eroded by the springs and spread. Many of these place would make a great drilling spot.

Even though these traces of coal lead elsewhere, these are still coal, and coal is fuel. So you send over the resources to build a drill, and come up with some designs to maximise production.
One seems to be able to out preform the rest, so it is constructed. And it turns out better than expected, being able to mine the scarse resource and cut out a large section of land. Even with this the deposit still may only last the next year or two.

Scout the foot of the mountain(1):
You search eastward, after a few days of uneventful scouting and thinking that the coal traces could have been going west, you find something somewhat unnerving. Coming across an area where the crags are covered in strange silk, further scans indicate that this silk is reinforced with metal. You activate the bio-sensors aboard the drone, only to find, nothing? Which is met with a bolt of acid coming from somewhere in the silk. You retreat to back to base to see the damage.
The acid itself seems specifically made to dissolve metal, although the drone got hit, it is not seriously harmed(Only taking 2% damage).

Scout Caves(2):
After not finding anything of importance above, you give the deeper caves a try. Worst outcome is one lost drone. And you delve inwards into the cave, barely keeping up enough speed to safely stay above the rocks, reaching the bottom a harsh upward manuever is made to keep the drone from crashing, but you made it. The drone is released into an open cavern, in several points the ceiling gives way to ice shining blue light into the cave, revealing large lakes of brine at the bottom of the cavern. Although this is a confined space, it has many passages leading northeast, west, and southwest. You don’t detect anything in this section of the cavern though. With the drone heading back, the air blast from the drone must of knocked many of the stalagmite and stalagtites down, making trips back and forth a little easier.

With coal supplies being somewhat low, you decide to get to making yourself a new drill into another section of the coal deposit. This one is built with as much finesse as the old one.

Scout for more ruins using The Explorer(6):
Taking a closer look with your new drone, looking into these ruins you find that they used to be many factories. A biological being with an interest in industrialization? Interesting… Looking around more you find a concrete trail buried in the dirt leading elsewhere, tracking it down it seems to lead to many more human constructs, including many signs of wooden structures, connected to what you can assume to be their power grid. Tracing the power grid leads you to whats left of a massive deposit of ruined material, mostly rusted steel, cement, and glass. While in this place your drones come into contact, must have been scanning the same thing.

Scout for iron using The Navigator(3):
With iron resources constantly going down, you decide they need to go back up. You start sending your drone to scout generally south, eventually you find a large amount of it, but it is different then the average iron deposit. You detect that this iron rust used to be steel, you also detect cement and glass. Strange. You soon encouter your other drone, looks like it found the same thing.

After the failure of the old refinery, you take the site of the old one and build a new one out of it.
This new one doesn’t have the flaws of the original, but does feel like it has some of the wear of the old one.

Scout for iron/copper(4):
Scouting for more material, you end up looking to the east, you soon find the sight of a expansive grassland. Looking further, you soon find a strange hill. On this hill there is plenty of iron and near the north side a small deposit of copper. Looking at it for more time reveals that there is a layer of, concrete? surrounding it. You don’t know for certain whether this is an unknown natural processing or something else made it.

For simplicity, you start constructing your new refinery on the the conveyer belt.
Its construction goes much better than expected as its placement lets the raw ore flow in and come out the other end refined, and the rest of the belt is now used to ship back the metal instead of the ore.

Scout for usable stone(4):
Now that you have iron production, you can set your sights towards stone.
Travel a long ways east, you nearly reach the end of your range and reach an area with many slopes and cliffs downwards. Banded with stone.
Two types of stone are found here. Limestone, deposited more recently, it is a vital ingredient in cement production. The other stone is Andesite, seemingly eroded, this hard stone has likely been here before life was. Along with the limestone there is a small amounts of deposited salt and silicate sand. Based on the evidence this may have once been an inland sea.

Construct Recon Drone(3):
With scouting being slow, you decide to make another drone to compensate.
Construction is goes well and is completely uninteresting.

Relocate Base into the cavern(1):
You decide that going deeper is a good idea, but you soon realize that you a 150 meter wide sphere. And that you can’t fit 150 meter wide ball 15 meter wide oval. So the only way to get yourself down there is to disassemble yourself. But you aren’t going to just do that without a plan.
So to test if you can actaully disassemble something and reassemble it below, you take your biggest not-you construct, your engine, and try to get it down. So you shut off power so and turn on a low power mode to not die instantly, and then attempt to move it. Getting it down is a nightmare, as it has to be taken piece by piece and getting it down the slopes is extremely difficult. Eventaully you manage to get all the parts down, and then assemble them, easy. But then you have to deal with connecting the pipes, and cords down, nearly taking your life. Luckily you manage to get the power connected, powering you back up, finally no longer running at rice cooker level power.
Doing this took all season and you don’t think it would be good idea to move yourself down without some real plans.
