Story

The plague is now finally cured, and the world is a lot safer already. The arms race for military might continues as people develop counter-offensive technologies to try to one-up each other. More and more nations are becoming civilizations, and populations is now growing at a much faster pace.

Volume 2: Diffusion
Round 51 - 700 BC

Phoenicia

Leader: Tekis

Actions: [Global] Meet Bananarama, [Global] Farms
Result: 18/20 +5 = 20/20!, 17/20
You send an expedition to meet the nation the Sandpeople split from, to find out more about them. While traversing the Nile, you come across an agricultural village with training academies with children in them and rhinoceroses roaming freely. This was a Bananaraman village. You met with their leader, and started off strong and ended up with really good relations. They give you a bundle of food as a gift, which increases your population.

You order the conversion of new lands to farmland. This new food source helps increase population. From now on, civilizations’ population increases much faster.

Actions: [Global] Go to Egypt, [45 (inventor, blacksmith, miner)] Iron, [25 Builders] Better roads, [20 Warriors] Javelin, [31] Irrigation, [Global] Better Weapons
Result: 19/20 +1 = 20/20!, 15/20 -7 +7 = 15/20, 17/20 - 8 +8 = 17/20, 20/20! -8 +6 = 18/20, 14/20 -8 +5 = 11/20, 6/20 +5 = 11/20
You decide to go on an expedition to Egypt. Once you arrived, you met not one but two nations, the Sandpeople and the Bananarama. Both were very kind for different reasons. The Hollow Sandpeople were naturally very nice to all visitors, and would have loved to trade with you, had you leave to continue exploring. When you visited the Bananarama, the first thing you saw was a big wooden wall and threatening words. Once you told them of your peaceful intentions, they let you in, interested by your advanced weaponry. You didn’t really have time to trade, but thanks to your similar cultures, you got along pretty well.

You use your new powerful furnaces to harness the power of iron. You can now cast things out of iron.

Your builders decide to upgrade your roads to connect all your villages together, making stone brick roads, which give +3 instead of +2 and +4 instead of +3 to their respective categories.

Your warriors normally use spears, but they wanted to find a way to improve them. They make javelins out of the new iron, which are lightweight and made to be thrown, granting a bonus +2 if they are used for ranged attacks.

Water isn’t always accessible everywhere, so a lot of land is not farmable. Your farmers came up with a solution. They dug canals to make water flow through these dry lands, which irrigates them and makes them better for farming. All this new land gives plenty of room for more farms, which increases your population.

You take your new knowledge of ironwork to make stronger weapons. You make your javelins out of iron and you make one-handed double-edged swords so they can be used alongside your shields. These iron weapons are tougher and more durable, giving +4 to combat rolls.

You are now officially a civilization.

Leader: Arthur of Londinium

Actions: [36 Metalworkers] Iron armour, [36 Engineers] Better ranged, [37 (Knights, Soldiers)] Destroy rodents’ nests
Result: 16/20 -6 +5 = 15/20, 11/20 -6 +5 = 10/20, 14/20 -6 +3 = 11/20
Your metalworkers forge iron in a way that it may be worn in combat. They make chainmail armour, which can be worn over cloth armour and grants +4 to combat rolls.

Your engineers try to make better bows, but the fail to do so.

Your knights and soldiers destroy every rodent’s nest they find. After doing so for so long, they don’t find any more.

You were visited by the Sandpeople and presented with uplifting news. They had the cure for your plague and happily gave it to you free of charge. Once you tried it on the infected, they became visibly better after a while, which means Brittania is finally rid of its plague. This cure however only works for the current plague, so it won’t be very useful outside treating this particular disease. As a result, people are healthier and your population rises.

Result: 19/20 -6 +5 = 18/20, 15/20 +5 = 20/20!, 9/20 +5 = 14/20, 10/20 -7 +8 = 11/20, 18/20 -7 +5 = 16/20
Your people do not disappoint you this time, using their new parchment to draw a topside view of what all the known regions would look like. With this new map, it’s harder to get lost, so it grants +3 when you explore a new area and +5 when you revisit an area.

You try to develop a way to blend in, so that you may ambush attackers. You live around plenty of forestry and hills, but bronze armour is very shiny and sticks out in the wilderness, so you had to design new armour. You made cloth armour, covered in branches and different shrubbery, in an attempt to fade with the environment. It’s a success! This will give -3 to invader rolls and +3 to ambush rolls. And as a bonus, cloth armour can also be worn under your current armour, so it grants a bonus +1.

In the constant pursuit of innovation, you decide to upgrade your boats yet again. You take your catamaran, and make them much longer. You add three triangular and adjustable sails to maximise wind efficiency, and you fill the deck with paddle stations for rowing when there’s no wind. These galleys are great for transporting a large amount of people, animals and even siege weapons! They add +4 to sailing rolls.

You send your merchants to Tarkahmehd in search of new farm animals. They are intrigued by the small flightless birds kept there, and trade goats for them. Chickens lay eggs, which can be made into omelettes if combined with goat milk. The new animals and food raise your population significantly. Your similar cultures and good relations increase your relations with them. From now on, population will rise a lot faster.

You decide to improve your shields to the latest tech you have. Bronze shields are much stronger than copper shields, granting +3 to combat rolls.

Bananarama

Leader: Barando

Actions: [Global] Walls, [Global] Caltrops
Result: 17/20, 14/20 +5 = 19/20
As you start to militarise, you decide that the next logical step would be to build a wall around your villages. This wooden wall may not be the sturdiest, but it’s better than nothing. It will give -1 to any attacker’s diceroll.

To stop attackers dead in their tracks, you make copper caltrops. These caltrops can be spread all over the battlefield or outside city walls to injure ground units. It’s most effective on cavalry type units. These will give -2 to an attacker’s roll or more if there is more cavalry.

Also, you were visited by the Phoenicians. You guys start on an excellent foot and have great relations.

You were also visited by the Hellenes. You had a very pleasant time getting to know them and their weapons better, so you started off with excellent relations.

Action: [33 (19 philosophers)] Better Oven, [81 (32 builders)] Wall, [54 (34 scouts)] Locate the crash site
Result: 16/20 -7 +1 +4 = 14/20, 16/20 -5 +1 +2 = 14/20, 10/20 -6 +2 +3 +5 (Location bonus) = 14/20
Your philosophers get to work trying to improve their ovens so that they may smelt tougher metals. They make fire kiln furnaces, which use dried clay walls to trap the heat and increase the fire’s power, which will help it increase even higher temperatures.

It’s always good to be prepared for an attack, even if it isn’t imminent. That is why you tasked your builders to make a wall all around the perimeter of both of your villages. The wooden wall is upgradable and will give -1 to attackers’ rolls.

You discover the crash site of the meteor, still smoking from the impact. It had created a pretty sizable crater, and it seemed very dense, which meant it had to be loaded with metals. You were the first to arrive because of your higher dice roll, but you saw that a crew from Kugelland arrived later. They seem to also want the meteor, but maybe you can reach an agreement. There is enough metal there to make one metal-related tech upgrade (like tools, weapons, things like that). What will you do?

Also, you were visited by the Laestrygonians. They traded some of your chickens for goats. THese new goats provide milk, meat and wool, which raises your population. Your similar cultures and frequent trading increase your relations with them. Population will raise a lot more now.

Mexica

Leader: Montezuma

Actions: [Global] Government, [Global] More houses
Result: 16/20 +2 +2 = 20/20!, 18/20
Mexica was getting too big to handle traditionally, so it was time for structure. After his loyal service to his people, Montezuma declared himself the king anointed by the Tonatians. He now wields absolute political, economic and military power, and all decisions must be approved by him. This organization helps with developing new technologies, granting +2 to tech rolls. As a bonus, people were so grateful to Montezuma, so they made him a small palace where he may reside. This can double as a governmental building, which grants +3 to tech rolls because you have a government.

Your people get busy building more houses to accommodate new people, which helps increase population.

You now have enough population to become a civilization.

Actions: [Global] Better armour, [Global] Gather a large herd, [Global] Raid a village
Result: 18/20, 11/20, 10/20 +11 = 20/20!
You forge your iron into new armour, vastly stronger than the last. Iron is very heavy, so to be usable, your people made chain armour. It’s a little weaker but a lot lighter than plate armour, which is important since you ride horses. This new armour will grant +4 to combat rolls, plus the fear effect from your last set of armour.

Your tribe spends a lot of time increasing their herd size so they may produce more food. This increase in food production increases your population.

You send your band on an excursion to raid yet another village. They attack Nisseria, which they easily obliterate, burning their houses with flaming arrows and cutting down anyone that fought back with their scimitars. When the Mongols were done, there was nothing left of this nation. It was completely wiped out, settlement included. On the plus side, you gained 36 followers and plundered shield technology. Using this newfound technology, you make round iron shields. These shields offer great protection and give +4 to combat rolls. They are effective against arrow volleys and are great for charging cavalry to avoid getting stabbed by infantry.

You are now officially a civilization.

Actions: [Global] Give the cure to Britannia
Result: 12/20 +1 = 13/20
After lots of experimentation, you finally had the cure for the Britannian plague. You wasted no time making a huge batch of soup and exporting it to Britannia. You packed your things and sent an expedition crew to the Northern isles. WHen you arrived, the Brtannians tried to chase you away, but once you told them about the cure, they let you in. Curing the disease that’s been plaguing them for so long made you instant allies. As a reward for your good deed, they give you a parting gift, consisting of tonnes of food, which will increase your population, and the knowledge of ironsmithing, combined with the furnaces necessary to smelt the iron.

Also, you were visited by the Hellenes. They were on an exploration mission so they only stopped by to rest, but you had a good encounter.

Result: 13/20 -6 +3 +3 = 13/20, 18/20 -8 +1 +2 = 13/20, 11/20 -8 +1 +2 = 6/20, 12/20 -8 +1 = 5/20, 20/20! -7 +2 = 15/20
You send your explorers to investigate the crash site. What they found was a meteor about the size of a bull in the centre of a deep crater. It was made of a dark and deep grey metal, almost shiny, meaning there was a very high metal homogeneity, meaning that it was a lot of metal. They also found another expedition crew from the Tarkahmehd, who seemed to have arrived there first. Will you reach an agreement, or will you fight for the resource?

You task your researchers to find battle tactics to increase your military might. They come up with a shield wall, with which your soldiers would line up with their large shields facing them, forming a wall of shields. This helped block arrows and is a very useful tactic, which gives +2 to combat rolls.

The rest of your researchers’ research however, remained fruitless. They couldn’t find a good metal that could be a viable alternative to copper.

Your farmers had even less fortune, building farms near a river that quickly flooded during a storm. No one was injured, but the new crops were ruined and unsalvageable.

You set up a perimeter for your guards to defend. These will grant -3 to your enemy attacks for two turns.

All of the new citizens are human, and 20 neanderthals are replaced by humans. The details will be in an updated spreadsheet. My population is majority human now, so maybe you should start decreasing my stability. I plan for there to eventually be an uprising, a turn or two of chaos and for some human splinter nations to arise. The remaining neanderthals will retreat to remote agricultural villages.

The human fishermen, goatherds, soldiers and the human healer of Laestrygonia develop smoke signals. The farmers and neanderthal fishermen of Laestrygonia develop waterwheels to turn the millstones. The neanderthal goatherds work on small wagons that they or their goats can pull along the roads. The traders and the neanderthal healer of Laestrygonia check in on Britannia, and trade better bows for better furnaces. The people of Xirimiri work on fertilization, and the people of Gerla trade sailing with Hellenes for pottery.

Phoenicia

Leader: Tekis

Actions: [Global] Government, [Global] Send your new soldiers to defend Bananarama
Result: 17/20, 11/20
It was time to unify the entire civilization under one government, so a government was formed. Tekis was named the Tea King and was now the head of the Phoenician monarchy. A government facilitates research by unifying everyone, so you get +2 to tech research rolls.

You sent your new soldiers over to Musa Sapientum Fixa. They accepted you as backup and let you stay in their village.

Result: 13/20 -8 +5 = 10/20, 18/20 -9 +4 = 13/20, 20/20! -8 +1 = 13/20, 15/20 -8 +8 = 15/20, 18/20 -9 = 9/20, 14/20 +4 = 18/20
Your blacksmiths fail to create good iron armour, despite their best efforts. The ones they made were either too heavy or too hard to recreate. They have to try more models.

Your inventors and healers get to work trying to develop a system to remember things. They remembered that the Laestrygonians would colour bits of animal hides or tree bark with weird symbols to keep track of their goods. Your inventors decided to copy that idea, making a system of symbols and words to make a writing system. Writing gives +2 to tech research.

You send a crew over to the Hollow Sandpeople to trade. When they arrived at Hollow Dust, they chatted and traded goods. Through diceroll, they traded their irrigation methods, which will help tremendously for farming when water can be far, for war rhinos, which give +2 to combat rolls or +3 if they’re aimed towards buildings. Although Hollow Sand splintered from the Bananarama because of differences in ideology, you still get along relatively well, but not enough to raise reputation.

Excess food can be stored in numerous containers, but when you have a lot of food to store, such as grains, you will need a building dedicated to it. That’s why you built granaries, which store various crops while keeping them relatively out of reach of pests. This excess food contributes to an increase in population.

You send your four explorers to the Spanish regions. Their trip was brief, because they packed very lightly, and they found nothing of interest.

Iron is a very useful metal, better than bronze in both durability and strength. That is why you abandoned copper tools in favour of using iron tools. These much more efficient iron tools increase food production, and in turn, your population.

Also, you were visited by the Laestrygonians. They complimented your militarised society and got along well with your population, but not substantially. They traded their knowledge of sailboats for your pottery.

Britannia

Leader: Arthur of Londinium

Actions: [Global] Establish a new village
Result: 14/20
Your village was getting a bit crowded and it was time to expand, so you sent a crew to build a new village. Winchester was built in no time, leaving lots of new room for people to move in.

Also, you were visited by the Laestrygonians. It had been a while and you were glad to see them again, so you threw a welcome party for them. They traded their longbows for your furnaces, but you were so grateful, you did one better and threw in ironwork, free of charge! THese longbows were tipped with inferior bronze arrows, which you discarded in favour of more durable iron arrows. You are now allies.

You now have a second global action.

You now have enough population to become a civilization.

Leader: Orko

Actions: [84] Smoke signals, [80 (Farmer, fisher)] Waterwheel, [20] Wagons, [37 (36 traders)] Trade with Britannia, [Global] Fertilization, [Global] Trade with Hellenes
Result: 15/20 -6 +5 = 14/20, 13/20 -7 +7 = 13/20, 14/20 -9 +5 = 10/20, 16/20 -8 +12 = 20/20!, 10/20 +5 = 15/20, 18/20 +11 = 20/20!
Watchtowers are great to spot enemies from a distance, but they still had to be built close to villages so that they may alert them. This can change with smoke signals, which your humans engineered to use different smoke shapes to deliver messages at a much farther distance. This enables you to build outposts, which can alert main villages, giving -3 to an attacker’s roll, which will be upgraded to -4 with outposts.

The millstones were successful in crushing grain, but they still had to be done by hand. It was tiresome, so your people tried to find a way to use the environment around them to their advantage. They noticed that a river’s current can be very powerful, pushing things along. SO, they made wooden wheels with protrusions all around the outside, and placed it above the river, so that the planks could be pushed by the current. It was a success! The wheel would spin through the sheer force of the current, which meant that the millstones could be attached to this wheel so that they may continually spin without human intervention. This waterwheel is a lot more efficient, so you can produce a lot more food, increasing your population.

Your goatherds take good care of their goats, but they didn’t think they could hook them up to carts so they may pull things. They were simply too small to be able to efficiently pull carts full of goods or people.

You send an expedition over to Britannia to see if their situation improved. When you arrived, the people looked cheerful and happy. It seemed that the dark days of sickness were gone. They were excited to finally see their favourite trading partners again, so they threw a huge festival for you. It was lots of fun. When the festival was over, you traded some of your longbows tipped with bronze arrows for their superior furnaces. On your way back, you were surprised with a parting gift, a free lesson in ironwork! You traded enough to become allies.

Back home, your farmers were starting to notice that the earth’s quality would deteriorate if they farmed the land too intensely, they wanted to revitalise the land with nutrients so that they may keep farming for longer. They thought that, since fruits and vegetables were good for them, they should be good for the earth, right? So, they took all the rotten and inedible crops they had and ground them up, mixing them with some water and soil, spreading them around the fields. It did wonders! This recycling improved the land quality and helped harvest more crops, which increased population.

You send Gerla on an expedition to visit the Hellenes. When they arrived, they were pleasantly surprised by how militarised the Hellenes had become, with walls, iron weapons and soldiers with formations. They got along quite well on a few points, such as the importance of a good military, but nothing too important. They came on a mission. They traded their knowledge of sailboats for the Hellenes’ pottery. When they came back, they used these pots to store goods, which helped increase population.

Actions: [Global] Better… Food?, [Global] Improve Walls
Result: 19/20, 20/20! +2 = 20/20!
Your food right now is pretty basic, but it can use some improvement. You start farming more produce and mixing them up using various spices, which you also start farming, to make delectable dishes. Along with increasing your population, fancy cooking will be added to your culture tab, and spices may become a very valuable commodity later…

You improve your walls and incorporate anti-siege weapons, such as mounting catapults on the walls. These stone walls would normally give -2 to invasion rolls, but they will give a bonus -2 if there are siege weapons involved.

Also, you were visited by the Phoenicians. Instead of trade, they came with soldiers, offering them as backup soldiers for you. Obviously, you accept, keeping them safe in your village as reserve.

You were also visited by the Mongols. This visit was actually very concerning, because the Mongol horde came with their army, backed with herds of animals, a clear symbol of sheer power. They are prepared for war, and confrontation now feels inevitable.

Due to recent confrontations, your relations with the Mongols have degraded significantly.

Result: 16/20 -4 +5 = 17/20, 13/20 -7 +8 = 14/20, 19/20 -7 +8 = 20/20!
It was time to establish a new village. You build one and name it Latipa. This new village creates space for more people to move in, increasing population.

You came to an agreement with the scouts of Kuegelland and brought the meteor back to your village to study it. This meteor contained a metal that was much tougher than iron, titanium! This titanium was in very limited quantities, so once you use it, it’ll disappear from your tech tab. It’s also shareable, unless you give it away, in that case it will also disappear from your tech tab.

Mathematics is a very important subject in warfare and everyday life. It helps solve problems and predict things, such as trajectories or quantities. That is why you decided to develop your society’s mathematics, which gives +1 to research rolls. As a bonus, it really helped create siege engines, so you made catapults, which give +2 to combat rolls, or +5 if they target buildings. These are upgradable.

Actions: [Global] Roads, [Global] Metallurgy
Result: 15/20, 20/20! +4 = 20/20!
Traversing the stretch of land between your different villages can be a bit of a challenge. That is why Montezuma ordered the pavement of roads between villages and buildings. These dirt roads facilitate the construction of buildings, granting +2 to infrastructure rolls and +3 to trade rolls if you establish a trade route. These are upgradable.

There may not be a lot of naturally occurring copper in the Mexican Valley, but that didn’t stop your people from using any bit they could scrounge up to smelt it into bronze, a tougher alloy.

Also, you were visited by the Kingdom of Coyotl, an NPC civilization that lives South from here. They are peaceful, but mostly militarily focused, which means your conflicting ideologies make you start off on the wrong foot. Maybe granting them favours of bringing them gifts may warm up your relations?

You are now officially a civilization.

Result: 15/20 -8 +1 = 8/20, 17/20 -8 +1 = 10/20, 19/20 -8 +1 = 12/20, 13/20
You’ve been nomadic for so long, you decided it would be better to settle down. Unfortunately, you couldn’t develop a proper form of permanent shelters, so you had to keep moving.

With your new knowledge of ironsmithing, you wanted to improve your weapons and cast them out of iron. Unfortunately, your researchers could not produce enough because of limited resources in the area they were in at the time.

You’re trying to develop siege weapons, but to do that, you first need to develop your mathematics. With mathematics, you can now research various siege weapons, and it even grants a +1 to research rolls.

You take your entire army and herds and you march towards the Bananaraman capital, Musa Sapientum Fixa. They feel intimidated by your bony and sinister armour and by your huge herds, a symbol of power. They understood the message, you mean business, and you’re ready for war. They will not back down though, so it seems that the clash is but a grasp away! The Bananarama are now hostile.

You task your researchers to develop better bows. They develop recurve bows, which, given its particular shape, increases the power of every shot. With copper arrows, this new bow grants +3 to combat rolls.

Your researchers develop new tactics to stay ahead and keep the advantage on the battlefield. They come up with the phalanx, inspired by the Hellenes, which grants +2 to combat rolls.

Your explorers stay near the crash site and eventually cede the meteor to the Tarkahmehd. They were mostly happy that they could work out a deal peacefully without compromising their relations.

Your farmers try their best to build farms, but they end up trying to cultivate in an infertile field, which produces mediocre yieldings.
